ACNE

WHAT IS ACNE?

Acne is a very common skin condition that usually appears during adolescence or young adulthood in 85% of cases.
It is characterized by the appearance of pimples (whiteheads). These pimples form because the hair follicles beneath the skin are clogged, causing chronic inflammation and an infection of the follicular pore.

The appearance usually occurs on the face and back, although it can also appear on other areas of the body.
Although acne can affect anyone, it most commonly affects adolescents and young adults, as previously mentioned.

There are some special forms of acne, such as:

  • Contact acne, which can affect adults who are exposed to certain industrial products or cosmetics.
  • Acne in newborns or children.
  • Drug-induced acne, which can be caused by certain medications, such as corticosteroids or oral contraceptives.
  • Adult female acne: This condition affects women over 30 and is characterized by the appearance of swollen pimples in the jaw and neck area, often associated with the menstrual period.

Furthermore, it often occurs simultaneously with rosacea, as both are inflammatory skin conditions and have common characteristics.

ACNE SYMPTOMS

Acne symptoms can manifest in different ways. In fact, some patients may experience several of these symptoms. The main symptoms include:

  • Comedones
  • Cysts
  • Crusts with skin eruptions
  • Pustules
  • Acne marks or scars
  • Redness around the skin eruptions
  • Blackheads
  • Papules
  • Symptoms consistent with rosacea

WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF ACNE

The exact cause of acne is unknown, although in most cases it is related to hormonal changes, such as those that occur during adolescence, menstruation, or pregnancy.

It is also known that acne is partially hereditary, and genes are involved in the predisposition to developing it. It is sometimes claimed that chocolate or fatty foods can cause acne, but there is no evidence to prove this. However, a poor diet, rich in flour, sugar, ultra-processed foods, and pro-inflammatory fats (seed oils), can cause this and other skin diseases by altering the intestinal microbiota and thus causing the entire body to malfunction.

Some factors implicated in the production of acne are:

  • Increased sebum production and sebaceous gland hyperplasia.
  • Abnormal scaling of keratinocytes.
  • Presence of Propionibacterium acnes.
  • Inflammation.
  • Hormonal activity, such as menstrual cycles or puberty.
  • Narrowing of the follicular canal.
  • Stress, driven by adrenal gland discharge.

WHAT CAN I DO?

Although there’s no way to prevent acne, there are certain skin care options available to reduce the number and severity of lesions.
The most important thing is to wash your skin daily with specific soaps to prevent excess oil and remove dead skin cells.

Once the first symptoms are detected, appropriate hygiene, moisturizing, and treatment products should be used.
It’s important to have a dermatologist determine the appropriate products for each stage of acne and for each skin type.

WHAT CAN WE OFFER YOU AT ONE FACE?

Acne treatment depends on the extent of the disease and the severity of the lesions.

It is important to start treatment early to avoid possible scarring.

The dermatologist will assess whether treatment should be based on medications and/or creams, whether laser treatments or peels should also be used, or whether a combination of treatments is necessary.

Once the scars have established, we also offer different types of treatments, such as trichloroacetic acid peels, non-ablative fractional laser, radiofrequency needles, microneedling, PRP injections, scar subcision, hyaluronic acid injections, or even surgical excision of the lesions.
